Calcium score, CT scan Calcium score is calculated for each coronary artery based on the density and volume of calcium deposits. This is known as calcified plaque burden. Though, it does not relate directly to the narrowing of the artery, it does relate to the underlying coronary atherosclerosis and its severity. Coronary calcium is a plaque marker in each blood vessel. This is calculated using the CT scan. The amount and the existence of calcium identified in a coronary artery indicate the amount and presence of atherosclerotic plaque. Such calcium deposits appear before the progression of symptoms of any heart disease such as shortness of breath or chest pain. The calcium score is used in determining the calcium percentile and this compares the calcified plaque burden to other asymptomatic women and men of identical ages. In association with the percentile, the calcium score helps your physician to determine the risk of aggravating coronary artery disease. Measuring the succession of this disease and the effectiveness of the treatment can be evaluated only with the calcium score. A calcium score indicating zero represents no calcified plaque burden and no significant artery narrowing. In such cases the likelihood of a cardiac event for more than 3 years does not over rule the presence of non-calcified plaque or totally eradicated the possibilities of a cardiac arrest. A calcium score of more than zero is an indication of some coronary artery ailment. The higher the score increases, the likelihood of significant narrowing of the coronary, this is compared with people having lower scores for 3 years. This is done to keep a track of the increase or decrease of calcium score. The coronary event shows progress with the increasing levels of calcium percentiles. The CT scanners are employed to measure the calcium amount in the coronary arteries. Artery hardening that is caused by plaque accurately marks the existence of calcium. It is observed that heart attacks are mainly caused by the rupturing of plaques. Plaque is made of cholesterol, fat, calcium and various other substances present in the blood. The calcium score is measured taking into consideration the plaque burden on the arteries, absolute and percentile score based on gender, age and ethnicity provides this score. The percentile represents the measure of the number of people with identical background who have lesser calcium and it also offers the measure of risk. A CT scan is mainly for assessing the heart and is not completely recommended for health assessment for liver or lungs. The coronary calcium score and the CT scan helps in assessing various other factors such as cholesterol that occurs in various parts of the body. Though, everybody needs cholesterol, high levels increase the risk of heart disease. Similarly, the high lipids can be lowered by exercise, diet and medication.
